What are the classifications of thermal transfer films? Below is an overview: typically, thermal transfer films consist of 3 to 5 layers. A three-layer thermal transfer film comprises a base layer, a printing layer, and an adhesive layer; a four-layer thermal transfer film includes a base layer, a release layer, a printing layer, and an adhesive layer; and a five-layer thermal transfer film consists of a base layer, a release layer, a printing layer, an adhesive layer, and a hot-melt adhesive powder layer.
What are the classifications of thermal transfer films? Below is an introduction: in fact, thermal transfer films typically consist of 3 to 5 layers, with three layers… Heat transfer film It consists of a base layer, a printing layer, and an adhesive layer; a four-layer thermal transfer film comprises a base layer, a release layer, a printing layer, and an adhesive layer; while a five-layer thermal transfer film includes a base layer, a release layer, a printing layer, an adhesive layer, and a hot-melt adhesive powder layer.

Below, taking four types of heat-transfer films as examples, we will explain the requirements and functions of each layer.
1. Adhesive layer: Its primary function is to provide strong adhesion to the substrate surface, ensuring a robust bond between the printing layer and the substrate. This adhesive must be compatible with the printing material; different adhesives, due to their varying chemical compositions, exhibit significantly different bonding strengths to the substrate. Therefore, selection should be based on the specific substrate being used.
2. Printing Layer: This layer forms the foundation of the printed product’s visual appeal. With advances in printing and image‑processing technologies, the printing layer now offers a wide array of colors and patterns; in particular, intaglio printing produces exceptionally fine and detailed graphics, enhancing the overall packaging and decorative effect.
3. Release Layer: This is a coating containing a release agent that remains solid at room temperature but melts at a specific temperature. It exhibits weak adhesion to the substrate, enabling rapid separation without leaving any residual adhesive. The release agent is crucial for ensuring the separation of the printing layer from the substrate and its transfer onto the receiving surface. For thermal transfer films, the release layer must offer excellent abrasion resistance, protect the color inks, reduce the intensity of ultraviolet radiation, minimize the adverse effects of airborne contaminants on the ink, extend the ink’s service life, and mitigate the adhesion between the substrate film and the printed layer.
4. Substrate: This refers to the carrier coated with release agents, inks, and adhesives. The substrate must exhibit excellent thermal stability and pressure resistance, with minimal tensile deformation. After high-temperature heat transfer printing, it should be easy to carve, cut, and process without excessive waste, deformation, delamination, or fading—these are the defining characteristics of heat-transfer films.
Due to its widespread use in the textile industry, it quickly captured the market. Coupled with the compelling advantages of on-demand printing, thermal transfer films have penetrated the industry even more rapidly. With so many printing technologies available, how has thermal transfer film managed to carve out a distinct niche? We’ll walk you through it below.
1. A key feature of heat-transfer film products is their high degree of personalization, a capability that traditional printing methods cannot match. Heat transfer can be applied to textile fabrics as well as footwear and bags; while personalized printing, screen printing, and other techniques can also achieve similar results, the number of manufacturers specializing in heat-transfer films remains strictly limited. Heat transfer film Primarily designed for individuals and small-batch production, it requires no plate-making and is ideal for solo entrepreneurs.
2. Wide applicability and versatile uses are primarily reflected in the fact that heat-transfer films can be employed in numerous applications, such as promotional shirts, T-shirts, and cultural apparel, all of which achieve diverse product value by printing different images onto various substrates.
