What is a heat-transfer film? A heat-transfer film serves as an intermediary for transferring designs. The design is cut using a vinyl cutter or an all-in-one inkjet printer, after which a hot-stamping machine presses the design onto the substrate, and the PET release liner is peeled off. Heat transfer film Is there only one type of material? Heat‑transfer films come in a wide variety; Burberry offers nine major series. The heat‑transfer process involves applying heat to the film once, transferring the decorative pattern from the film onto the surface of the decorative building material, thereby creating a high‑quality decorative film.

During the heat-transfer process, the protective layer and the graphic layer separate from the polyester substrate under the combined action of heat and pressure, while the entire decorative layer is bonded to the substrate via a hot-melt adhesive. Heat transfer film It consists of a polyethylene film as the backing, with a wood‑grain decorative layer printed on its surface, and coated with a protective layer, a base color layer, a release layer, and a hot‑melt adhesive layer. By heating a high‑temperature silicone roller to apply both temperature and pressure, the transfer foil is bonded to the substrate, causing the transfer layer—comprising the decorative wood‑grain print, the surface protective layer, and the base color layer—to separate from the polyethylene and adhere to the surface of engineered boards or furniture components, thereby forming a decorative surface pattern. This material exhibits excellent properties such as wear resistance, heat resistance, and lightfastness, with novel, aesthetically pleasing designs and stable color tones, making it a widely used decorative material.
Heat-transfer films possess unique properties. To achieve optimal hot-stamping results, it is essential to precisely control temperature, pressure, and speed—three critical process parameters. The following provides an overview of these parameters.
1. Determining the temperature: If the temperature is too low, the hot stamping will be ineffective or poorly adhered, and the impression may blur. Conversely, excessively high temperatures can cause oxidation on the surface of the color layer, resulting in loss of gloss, darkening of the color, and even bubbling. To set the hot stamping temperature, consider factors such as pressure, speed, stamping area, and ambient room temperature. Typically, the hot stamping temperature ranges from 140°C to 180°C; once set, it should remain constant, with fluctuations kept within ±2°C.
2. Determining the pressure: The typical hot‑stamping pressure is 4–6 kg/cm². If the pressure is too low, the transfer film will fail to adhere to the substrate, reducing adhesion; if it is too high, the substrate will undergo excessive compression and deformation, causing image distortion and thinning of the printed layer. When hot‑stamping complex, uneven surfaces, particular attention must be paid to ensuring uniform pressure across all contact points. The pressure angle between the gold‑stamping roller and the substrate should be relatively steep; otherwise, some areas may bond firmly while others remain poorly adhered.
3. The printing speed should be determined based on the size of the hot-stamping area, while also taking into account the heating temperature and power settings. Typically, the speed is set first, followed by the pressure. Heat transfer film Handle the product with care; store it upright, never lying horizontally, and keep it away from heat sources. Store at a temperature of around 25°C, in a dry environment. If exposed to moisture, high temperatures may cause gases to react chemically with the hot‑stamping film. Therefore, during storage and use, ensure the film is protected from moisture and pressure, and keep it in a well‑ventilated, cool, and dry location.
